MLB suspends Diamondbacks pitcher for betting on pro baseball games

Major League Baseball announced that the player was ineligible to play for a year after the bets came to light.

PHOENIX — A Major League Baseball investigation recently revealed that an Arizona Diamondbacks player had placed dozens of sports bets in violation of the organization's rules and policies.

D-backs pitcher Andrew Saalfrank was suspended from play for a year after MLB discovered that he placed 29 baseball-related bets — 28 of which were on MLB games, including four games where the D-backs played — from 2021 to 2022.

Saalfrank was contracted with the team while the bets were placed. He was one of five players penalized by the organization.

In total, Saalfrank bet $444.07 and lost $272.65 on MLB games. He didn't play in any of the games that he bet on.

"All of the players denied that they had any inside information relevant to the bets or that any of the baseball games they bet on were compromised or manipulated, and the betting data does not suggest that any outcomes in the baseball games on which they placed bets were compromised, influenced, or manipulated in any way," read a statement from MLB.
