ARLINGTON, Texas — When it came to choosing a lead-off hitter for Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, National League Manager Torey Lovullo didn't have to look further than his own home dugout.

"Leading off for us is going to be Ketel Marte," Lovullo, the Arizona Diamondbacks manager, said.

Marte is Lovullo's starting second baseman back home in the Valley and will be the starting second baseman for the NL in the All-Star Game.

Lovullo made sure to joke about his decision, saying, "Maybe a little insider trading, some favoritism, right?"

Marte is in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career, as the 30-year-old is slashing .292/.362/.877 with 19 home runs and 57 runs batted in as MLB hits its midsummer break.

The reigning NLCS MVP was named to his second All-Star game this year. He also made the team in 2019 when he finished the year with 32 home runs and 92 RBI. Marte finished fourth in NL MVP voting that season and is considered a candidate for the award this season.

The All-Star Game will begin at 5 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday.
