PHOENIX — Did you see a fan holding a sign that said 'It wasn't a fair catch' during Game 3 of the World Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers and wonder what it meant?
Well, 12Sports is here to help.
You may have noticed the fan was wearing a bright yellow Iowa Hawkeyes shirt. That is the first clue to explaining this mystery.
We did some quick digging and found out his sign is referring to the ending of the football game between Iowa and the Minnesota Golden Gophers this past Saturday.
With Minnesota leading 12-10 in the fourth quarter, the Gophers punted to the Hawkeyes.
Iowa returner Cooper DeJean returned the punt for a touchdown, but it was called back as the referees ruled that DeJean gave an invalid fair catch signal by waiving with his left hand after pointing at the ball with his right.
Iowa got the ball, but quickly threw an interception and Minnesota went on to win.
And apparently, the fan at Chase Field, who would have had to pay more than $1,000 for the seat behind home plate, is still upset about the call.
