2023 NLCS Game 2 preview: D-backs look to rebound against Phillies

Game 2 is a MUST WIN for Arizona. They can’t afford to fall down 0-2 in this series with the way the Phillies are swinging the bats.

PHILADELPHIA — Arizona Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo called Game 2 an important game. Since he won’t say it, I’ll say it for him – Game 2 is a MUST WIN for the D-backs. They can’t afford to fall down 0-2 in this series with the way the Phillies are swinging the bats.

Philadelphia is starting righty Aaron Nola. He has been dominant this postseason, 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. Nola won his only start against the D-backs in the regular season, going 6 2.3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 9 strikeouts.

At the plate, the Phillies set a postseason record with 12 home runs over the past 3-games, including three in Game 1. That makes 16 home runs in their last seven games, averaging a league best 5.1 runs per game.

D-backs starter Merrill Kelly is calling this the “biggest (start) of his career.” He’s 1-0 this postseason and hasn’t allowed a run. Kelly was near perfect in their 11-2 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLDS.

In three career starts against the Phillies, Kelly is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA. The biggest key for the D-backs is to find some offense. Their one-through-seven hitters combined for just two hits in Game 1 of the NLCS.

D-backs have battle adversity all season. They got comeback experience. There’s a reason we’ve called them the Answerbacks all season, time to show in again.
