A homecoming of sorts for Pat Murphy

Friday's Padres, D-Backs game will bring Pat Murphy back to the valley, this time as a MLB manager.
Mar 5, 2015; Peoria, AZ, USA; San Diego Padres manager Bud Black (20) talks to coach Pat Murphy before a spring training baseball game against the Seattle Mariners at Peoria Sports Complex.

Friday will mark a homecoming, of sorts, for San Diego Padres interim manager Pat Murphy.

Murphy was the head baseball coach at Arizona State for 15 seasons, leading the team to four College World Series appearances, before heading to join the Padres' organization.

The Sun Devils won four Pac-10 titles under Murphy and he had a record of 629–284–1 during his time in Tempe.

His tenure though, was ended when ASU fired him in November of 2009 after an NCAA investigation into the program.

Murphy was cleared of any unethical conduct, but was said to have had a "cavalier attitude" towards NCAA regulations.

It is a new period though in Murphy's life, as he was named the interim manager of the Padres on Tuesday.

"I got the call at 7:42 and I was meeting with players a half hour later. I didn't know if it was real or not," said Murphy on Friday.

It is his first MLB managerial opportunity.
