MESA, Ariz. — Sidney Poitier, the iconic actor, broke many barriers becoming the second African American actor to win an Oscar. He fought for diversity his entire life.
A new mural of the legendary actor was unveiled at ASU’s Sidney Poitier New American Film School in Mesa. The Shining Light Foundation commissioned it.
“If he could be here, it gives me tears and see this facility and the passion,” said Cheryl Boone Isaacs. The founding director of the film school.
The same passion the first black male Oscar-winning actor and accomplished director had for filmmaking.
The day was also about celebrating past black artists through dance and music.
Many of whom broke barriers like Poitier, who now give opportunities to modern artists.
“I love celebrating the advancement,” said Isaacs.
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the past president of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, who worked toward creating more diversity in the film industry, said celebrating artists like Poitier will help students achieve their dreams.
“What is the key to success for the country? For our communities, our country. Is opportunities for those who wish,” said Isaacs.
