PHOENIX — Happy playoff season to all Arizona high school football fans from the Friday Night Fever team! The playoffs are now officially underway in all of Arizona's conferences and will begin for the Open Division next week.
In this article, we'll take a look at the results from the first round of the 5A playoffs and preview the matchups for the quarterfinals.
5A Playoffs First Round Results
- No. 1 ALA-Gilbert North defeated No. 16 Goldwater, 49-21
- No. 2 Tucson defeated No. 15 Cienega, 14-7
- No. 3 Buena defeated No. 14 Casa Grande, 65-28
- No. 4 Cactus defeated No. 13 Mountain View Marana, 42-13
- No. 12 Raymond S. Kellis upset No. 5 Ironwood Ridge, 49-7
- No. 6 Verrado defeated No. 11 Notre Dame Prep, 17-14
- No. 7 Desert Edge defeated No. 10 Cactus Shadows, 42-19
- No. 8 Campo Verde defeated No. 9 McClintock, 42-39
5A Playoffs Quarterfinal Matchups
- No. 1 ALA-Gilbert North vs. No. 8 Campo Verde
- No. 2 Tucson vs. No. 7 Desert Edge
- No. 3 Buena vs. No. 6 Verrado
- No. 4 Cactus vs. No. 12 Raymond S. Kellis

The four quarterfinal games will be played on Friday, Nov. 22 and each game will be hosted by the higher-seeded school.
The 5A State Championship Game will be played at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at Arizona State University's Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
There will be a new state champion in 5A this year as Higley, which has won the past two 5A state titles, was selected to compete in the Open Division playoffs this year.
