PHOENIX — Next Friday in Tempe, we will witness one school get crowned a state champion for the first time as No. 2 Arizona College Prep will take on No. 4 Mica Mountain in the 4A State Championship Game.
It has been a rapid ascent for both schools to the pinnacle of 4A football.
Arizona College Prep (12-1, 5-0 4A Desert Sky region) began playing as a varsity team in the AIA in 2A back in 2017. The Knights are making just their fourth-ever playoff appearance. This is the first time they have advanced past the quarterfinals.
Mica Mountain (13-0, 5-0 4A Kino region) played their first varsity season just two years ago and are developing into a 4A power. The Thunderbolts made it to the 4A semifinals last year, where they lost to eventual state champion Canyon Del Oro, and now have reached the championship game.
ACP defeated No. 3 Snowflake (12-1, 4-0 4A East Sky region), 59-21, and Mica Mountain upset No. 1 Yuma Catholic (11-2, 5-0 4A West Valley region), 24-14 in the semifinals on Friday night.
This will be the first-ever meeting between these two schools in football, according to MaxPreps.
The updated 4A bracket is below.
The 4A State Championship game will be played at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at Arizona State University's Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
