TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State's football season ended less than two weeks ago and head coach Kenny Dillingham is already making changes to his coaching staff.
On Monday, ASU announced that former UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo has been named as the team's new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, taking over for Beau Baldwin, who was let go after the season.
Arroyo has been coaching in college football and the NFL for nearly 20 years.
Arroyo began his coaching career at his alma mater, San Jose State. He played quarterback for the Spartans from 1998-2002 and became an undergraduate assistant coach in 2003.
Arroyo took over as the offensive coordinator at Prairie View A&M in 2004 before heading back to San Jose St. as a graduate assistant in 2005. He was promoted to become the quarterbacks coach in 2006. He was then promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, a post Arroyo held for two seasons.
In 2010, Arroyo took his first job in the Mountain West Conference at Wyoming, where he worked as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2009-10. It was there that he developed quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels into the 2009 Mountain West Freshman of the Year.
Arroyo's next job took him to the Pac-12 Conference at Cal, where he was the passing game coordinator from 2011-12.
In 2013, Arroyo became the offensive coordinator and outside receivers coach at Southern Mississippi. Quarterback Nick Mullens was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team during Arroyo's lone season with the Golden Eagles.
Arroyo made a jump to the NFL in 2014 as he was hired to be the quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Later that season, he took over as interim offensive coordinator after Jeff Tedford (who Arroyo worked under at Cal) was unable to coach due to a medical procedure.
In 2015, Arroyo went back to college and became the running backs coach for two seasons on Mike Gundy's staff at Oklahoma State.
In 2017, Arroyo moved to the Pac-12, when he joined Willie Taggart's staff as the co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and tight ends coach at Oregon.
After Taggart left for Florida State in 2018, Arroyo's co-offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal took over as Oregon's head coach. Cristobal kept Arroyo on his staff as the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, a post he held until being hired at UNLV's head coach in 2020.
Arroyo coach current Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert at Oregon, helping develop Herbert into a first-round NFL Draft pick.
Arroyo was the head coach at UNLV for just three seasons, as he was let go after the 2022 season, but his impact is still being felt in Las Vegas, as some of the players he recruited helped lead the Rebels to an appearance in the Mountain West Conference Championship game this season and berth in the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl at Chase Field.
Arroyo and his wife Kelly have two children.
ASU hires new Defensive Line Coach
Arroyo's hire was not the only change made to Kenny Dillingham's staff, as Diron Reynolds was hired as the team's new defensive line coach on Sunday.
Reynolds takes over for Vince Amey, who is transitioning to become a defensive analyst so he can spend more time with his family.
Reynolds has more than 25 years of coaching experience in both college football and the NFL. He spent the 2023 season as the defensive line coach at Michigan State, but spent seven seasons before that as the defensive line coach at Stanford.
He has also worked with the Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Hoosiers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Reynolds played for Wake Forest from 1990-93 and has coached five NFL Draft picks, two All-Americans and four Pro Bowlers.
Transfer Portal
The college football transfer portal opened Monday. It will stay open for the next 30 days and some now-former Sun Devils have entered the portal.
On Monday defensive lineman BJ Green, cornerback Isaiah Johnson, offensive tackle Isaia Glass, wide receiver Alonzo Brown, running back Javen Jacobs and quarterback Drew Pyne all officially entered the portal.
Cornerback Jordan Clark announced that he was transferring on December 1 and tight end Jalin Conyers said he was going to enter the portal on November 30.
Clark announced Monday that he will be transferring to Notre Dame.
In total, more than 1,000 college football players around the nation entered the transfer portal on Monday. More than 2,100 players have entered the portal since the end of the regular season, according to ESPN's Tom VanHaaren.
