Fans wage war over 'A' Mountain colors in Tempe

Arizona State fans looking up at Hayden Butte, which is also known as 'A' Mountain, in Tempe may have been feeling blue over the weekend. Here's why.

TEMPE, Ariz. — The 'A' looking down over Arizona State University on Hayden Butte, which is also known as 'A' Mountain, is back to being gold after spending part of Presidents Day Weekend blue, according to posts on social media.

One post, from a user known as 'WildcatAlum'93' on X, showed a picture of the A painted what appeared to be sky blue on Sunday.

Arizona Wildcats fans appear to be the culprits behind painting the 'A,' as it was done just hours after the No. 4 Arizona men's basketball team beat Arizona State by 45 points in Tucson on Saturday. That was the largest margin of victory for Arizona in the history of the rivalry.

Some Arizona State fans couldn't help but point out that the Wildcat fans look to have used the wrong color blue.

"Thats way more like UCLA or Cal blue though," a post from Morie Ostroff on X read. "Does not look UofA blue. Maybe they couldn't find dark blue at the store. LOL"

"Also hilarious that even the mild cats couldn't get the right shade of blue," a post from 'gorillamuse' on X read.

However, one person, who goes by 'PawcAZt' on X pointed out that the blue is similar to the new sky blue baseball uniforms the Wildcats debuted for opening weekend.

The 'A' didn't stay blue for long. The 'ASU Moms' account on X said that volunteers came together to paint the 'A' gold once again.

The Wildcats and Sun Devils will face off again on Feb. 28 in Tempe. Tip-off for the game at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe is scheduled for 8 p.m.
