Marvel is leading the charge this week with new titles galore and other 'Secret Wars' titles that are already in circulation. There are a few new releases from Image and BOOM!, but nothing that really caught my eye. DC is releasing 'Comic's Bombshells' #2 for those who enjoyed the solid first issue. But really, this week belongs to Marvel, and it's time to show you why.
Deadpool vs Thanos #1
Allow me to preface this title by saying I love Thanos. I think he is one of the best villains in comic book history. Why? He's the man who single-handedly made bejeweled gloves into the deadly weapon of choice for mass murder. 'Infinity Gauntlet' is one of the greatest stories written next to 'Age of apocalypse.'
Now allow me to further preface that I love Deadpool. His personality, the breaking of the fourth wall, the sheer genius that goes behind that character, that many just don't understand is a lot more clever than one-liners. However, my love for these characters is NOT the reason I am making this my personal pick of the week. The premise of the story is.
Apparently Thanos shares an ex with Deadpool. No, not Vanessa, I refer to the cosmic 'lady' known as DEATH. And when everyone in the universe stops dying, both of her former beaus take an interest. Can the pair overcome their individual overwhelming hatred of and annoyance by the other? Or will Thanos finally let Deadpool die once and for all?
Yeah right. Please note, this is extra not-a-story-for-the-kiddos. Mature readers only.
Miracleman by Gaiman and Buckingham #1
There is an extensive history of Miracleman when it comes to Marvel, Todd MacFarlane, licensing rights, Neil Gaiman and all sorts of other shenanigans. But for that history, hit Google, I don't have the time or energy to delve into that. Plus, I think my editor would kill me if I made him read the eight pages of legal battles that would follow.
I digress. Miracleman was created in the '50s and was originally known as Marvelman. He was a mainstay for years. After a stint from writer Alan Moore, he was then handed over to Moore's good friend Neil Gaiman. Gaiman teamed up with artist Mark Buckingham to produce a series of Miracleman comics for Eclipse Comics, who went bankrupt leaving the series unfinished. Now, the duo's epic sees fruition.
Two years have passed since the decimation of London. Miracleman presides over mankind's Golden Age from atop Olympus. Pilgrims climb its miles-high peak to petition their new god. Each carries hopes that are pure. The motives they conceal, however? Miracleman explores Infraspace in the opening chapter of 'Retrieval,' but just what, or who, is he looking for? Including material originally presented in Miracleman #17, plus bonus content. Another book not intended for younger readers.
