Did you hear that? That collective sound of millions of super-fanboys exhaling all at once? According to Den of Geek, Marvel has obtained the rights for the Fantastic Four from Fox. Now listen for that collective groan. Turns out, the rumors are false.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Following an announcement that Marvel has given Fox the rights to make two television series featuring the X-Men, the rumors flew that this was due to the rights of the Fantastic Four being handed back to Marvel.
So, by my count, Fox has all the sole rights to the X-Men aside from the comics. The comics however are being slaughtered by Marvel in an attempt to destroy any future characters for Fox to cash in on, not that they can't make enough bank off Wolverine alone, but who's counting?
.After the recent 'Fantastic Four' movie failed by epic proportions, 20th Century Fox was hoped to have finally given up on the notion that they can produce a movie fans can relate to. I'm not saying it can't be done, but fans know that there will be no future success, unless maybe, they made the unicorn of all movies.
"Fox were given the TV rights for X-Men in exchange for Fantastic Four," Den of Geek exclusively reveals. "The deal's been in the works for some time, we're told, and further, the timing of Marvel's recent announcement of its movie slate leading up to the year 2020 and the X-Men TV series is no coincidence.
You may remember that there are three, so-far untitled films on Marvel's schedule in five years' time," added Den of Geek. "We're told that one of those films is a Fantastic Four movie."
Just last week Marvel confirmed that three untitled films would be heading our way in 2020 to kick off Phase 4. So, naturally, a new 'Fantastic Four' movie was hoped to be among them. Add that on to the fact that we could possibly get Silver Surfer in 'Infinity Wars 1 & 2,' and this is the moment all of nerdom has been waiting for.
There is no love lost between Fox and Marvel, but with Fox all but lost on Fantastic Four, and the success of the recent X-Men movies, it makes sense to cash in on what you are doing right, and cut your losses on a failed franchise. Sadly, we will have to wait. Unless Fox is balking.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the move right before the summer started when Marvel obtained the rights for Spider-Man back from Sony. Sony still holds the rights to make their own stand alone Spider-Man movies, but Marvel can now make their own Spider-Man movies, starting with a small role in 'Captain America: Civil War.'
"We don't have an independent source to back this claim up, so we'll have to treat it with a certain amount of caution for now," said the source from Den of Geek, but with the mess that was this summer's "blockbuster," it makes sense for both studios, but a win for Marvel. So naturally, that's probably why it isn't happening.
