As he announced Nov. 9 on EVB Live, Doug Meehan will leave Phoenix at the end of November to return to his hometown of Boston, MA.

Expanding upon the on-air announcement, Doug penned this letter to viewers.

I guess you can go home again.

It's an interesting proposition, given the fact that Arizona and the Valley have become like a second home to Kristine, Tucket and me. However, we were recently presented with an offer that will indeed lead us back to Boston.

There are many personal reasons for returning to New England and the timing of this incredibly rare professional opportunity was just too perfect to pass up. I am extremely excited to be joining the #1 news team, "NewsCenter 5" at WCVB-TV,  as an anchor and reporter. Yes, that will include reporting once again in the middle of Nor'easters and blizzards. l will need to find my cold weather gear.

That said, we have been blessed to meet so many wonderful people during our time here. Many will become lifelong friends. That is always the most difficult aspect of leaving an endearing place like the desert Southwest.

We also take with us vivid memories of amazing people and their stories. Some that stand out include the heart-wrenching loss of the 19 Granite Mountain Hot Shots. While anchoring alongside Kim Covington, the true horror of the situation unfolded as details emerged with the morning's first light. We will never forget them.

Also serving as a witness to the power of Mother Nature and monsoon season is something I'll never forget. During the summer of 2014, while anchoring live coverage of flooding rains, we watched together as the torrent of rushing water carried away a home with two people trapped inside. Had it not been for two random trees stopping the home and the bravery shown by rescuers, who knows what would have happened.

Then, there is the way this community comes together to support a cause – and one another. After we first arrived in 2013, and only being here for 3 months, I rushed back to Boston to cover the marathon bombings. The following Friday I experienced my first "Pat's Run." The patriotism, fellowship and goodwill that was extended back to Boston was, at times, overwhelming. I will always be grateful to the people of Arizona for that special gift.

And how can I forget the awesome opportunity to cover my first Super Bowl. From the transformation of downtown Phoenix to "Super Bowl Central"... to the epicenter of the sporting and entertainment world descending upon the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale… it was beyond expectations. Granted they were long and exhausting days, it was worth every second. And how about that GAME!

As with the seasons, change in the television news business is inevitable. It's how we spend that time and the relationships we build during those seasons that make each and everyone of them special.

On behalf of my family, I thank you for making us part of yours.

Cheers,

Doug
