A Phoenix activist group has issued a "travel warning" to minorities, telling them to be careful around Phoenix police.
The group Poder in Action issued the warning because it said minorities were more likely to be involved in officer-involved shootings than whites, according to the warning.
"We started tracking officer-involved shootings and we started tracking who they are and where they were," said executive director Viri Hernandez.
According to Phoenix PD's own numbers, available online, 43 people have been involved in an officer-involved shooting this year. That's a record number that far surpasses 2017's total of 21.
And according to those numbers, minorities are almost twice as likely to be involved in a Phoenix police officer-involved shooting than whites.
The Phoenix Police Department did not comment, but a spokesperson did say: "The Phoenix Police Department prides itself on treating all people with dignity and respect."
The department is currently awaiting an outside study on the police shootings in 2018. That report is expected in January or February of 2019.
