PHOENIX - It's been nearly 12 years since an armored car driver was robbed and killed in Ahwatukee and the prime suspect is on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.
The suspect's story doesn't begin in the Valley, where the cold-blooded killing happened, but in Southern California, among the rich and famous. That's where Jason Derek Brown grew up.
Brown was an all-American guy. He had Hollywood good looks and the charismatic charm, athleticism and adventurous spirit to be the envy of all his friends. It looked like Brown had it all.
But looks can be deceiving. And the greed and money that drove Brown surfaced in Ahwatukee on Nov. 29, 2004.
A 911 caller told dispatchers, "There were about five shots fired."
That call came from the AMC Ahwatukee 24 theater at Ray Road and 50th Street. The shots killed an armored car guard, Robert Keith Palomares, who was 24 years old.
The cold-blooded killer was caught on camera escaping with $56,000 in cash and riding a bike that would later be found in a ditch.
FBI agents took over the investigation and quickly called the Southern California socialite, Jason Derek Brown, the prime suspect. They say Brown's fingerprints were on the bike. Plus, he was seen on surveillance video in the lobby of a motel near the movie theater on the day of the shooting.
On top of that, ATF records show Brown bought a Glock .45 in Salt Lake City, Utah a few weeks before the deadly robbery.
"He said, 'What's the most powerful?' He was very cocky, very arrogant," said Clark Aposhian.
After the killing, FBI agents traced Brown to his sister's home in Southern California. He learned of the investigation and escaped. Brown has not been seen or heard from since then.
Now, the FBI has Brown on its Ten Most Wanted list and is offering up to $200,000 for information that leads to his arrest.
