Pima County inmate dies during surgery, sheriff's department says

PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — A man in the custody of the Pima County Sheriff's Department has died while undergoing a medical procedure, according to authorities.

The sheriff's department said an inmate identified as 59-year-old James Waddell died on Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. during surgery at a local hospital.

"During the surgery, he suffered complications and despite hospital staff’s attempted life-saving measures, was pronounced deceased," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Waddell had been in Pima County custody since his arrest on June 4. He was admitted to the hospital on Oct. 2, the sheriff's department said.

At this time "no suspicious circumstances" have been noted about Waddell's death, the sheriff's department said.

The investigation into the man's death is ongoing, the sheriff's department said.
