Responding Maricopa fire and medical crews found two people inside the car when they arrived to the scene of the crash.

The car's passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. An update on that person's condition is not available.

"Following a preliminary investigation, officers believe the car was traveling west on W. McDavid Road at a high speed when the driver failed to make a left turn just east of N. Taft Avenue," officials said in a news release. "As a result, the vehicle traveled across the eastbound lanes and collided with a tree."

Officials have not released the name of the person killed in the crash.

Investigators are working to determine if impairment factored into the crash.
