Police: Arizona high school wrestler 'aggressively tackled' opponent's coach

Police said the wrestler and his father needed to be restrained during the commotion.

SAFFORD, Ariz. — Safford police said they were called when a fight broke out during a high school sectional wrestling match on Saturday.

Police said a wrestler for Canyon Del Oro High School, 18-year-old Michael Buda, aggressively tackled the opposing coach from the Salpointe Catholic High School team.

Officials, school staff and team members from both teams tried to restrain the wrestler when his father, 39-year-old Michael Buda, who had come down from the stands, crossed a barrier and came onto the mat area “in an aggressive manner.”

Police said the elder Buda was restrained as well.

Safford detectives are investigating the matter and are determining whether charges will be filed.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association also said it will be looking into the incident:

"The association is waiting for reports from CDO, Salpointe and Safford, as well as the police report. Once all those documents are in, there will be review and discussion. There is no timetable on it right now as none of the reports have made it to the office and the state championships are this weekend."
