Steve Gaynor takes back lead over Katie Hobbs in race for Arizona secretary of state

The Associated Press called the race for Gaynor on election night.

PHOENIX - While the race for the U.S. Senate between Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally has garnered most of the attention, but another crucial Arizona race is still up for grabs, and even closer than the Senate race.

It's the secretary of state race, an extremely important office in the state if history tells us anything.

Secretary of state is the number two office in Arizona. In the last four decades, five governor's have not finished their terms. Four of those times, the secretary of state has assumed the position.

Republican candidate Steve Gaynor led by 44,000 votes on election night and led the Associated Press to call the race in his favor over Democrat candidate Katie Hobbs. We followed suit.

Prior to Maricopa County's 5 p.m. ballot drop on Sunday, where it submitted an estimated 36,000 more counted ballots, Gaynor's lead had shrunk all the way to about 1,500 votes.

After Maricopa County posted to the state Sunday, Hobbs took the lead by a slim margin of 150 votes.

Gaynor took the lead back just after 6 p.m. on Sunday when Pinal County posted counted ballots to the state.

After Yavapai County posted ballots to the state just before 8 p.m., Gaynor led by 424 votes.

But, there are still an estimated 162,000 ballots left to count in Maricopa County.
