Kate Gallego took the lead in the special election for Phoenix mayor Tuesday, but the winning candidate will be decided in March.
The special election requires 50 percent plus one vote to declare a winner to fill former Mayor Greg Stanton’s seat.
And while Gallego had a decisive victory in a four-person field, she did not receive the amount needed to win the office on Tuesday.
Gallego, as of Wednesday morning, received 44 percent of the vote while Daniel Valenzuela received 26 percent.
Moses Sanchez had 19 percent of the vote and Nicholas Sarwark got 11 percent.
The top two candidates, Gallego and Valenzuela, will appear on the ballot for the March 12, 2019 special election.
The winner will fill the vacancy of this term, which expires Jan. 2, 2020.
Stanton resigned as Phoenix mayor in October 2017. Stanton is running for office in Congressional District 9.
Meanwhile, councilperson Thelda Williams is interim mayor.
