Gov. Hobbs signs petition to put abortion access on the 2024 ballot

The petition seeks to amend the Arizona state constitution to protect abortion access until the fetus is viable.

PHOENIX — Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs put her name on a growing list of people petitioning to get abortion access on the ballot in 2024.

Arizona for Abortion Access started a push to ask Arizona voters to create a constitutional right to abortion. Supporters have until July 3 to collect nearly 384,000 valid signatures to get the measure on the ballot.

Gov. Hobbs was joined by a group of Republicans, Democrats, and independents who also signed their names to the petition.

“Arizonans of all political affiliations agree: these deeply personal healthcare decisions are best left to women and medical professionals without interference from the government or politicians,” Gov. Hobbs said during the signing.

If the petition passes, voters would get to decide on amending the state constitution to ensure abortion access until the fetus is viable — roughly 24 weeks or later into the pregnancy.

Hobbs previously signed an executive order barring county prosecutors from bringing abortion-related cases to court, despite Arizona's recently-legislated 15-week abortion ban.
