Winner announced in tight Democratic primary race for CD3

The recount process for Congressional District 3 was triggered after neither Yassamin Ansari or Raquel Terán secured enough votes for a clear lead.

PHOENIX — The race for Congressional District 3 was one of the tightest Democratic primaries in the state. On Tuesday, Yassamin Ansari was finally declared the winner.

She will face Republican Jeff Zink in the November general election for the open seat that leans Democratic and encompasses parts of central Phoenix. It was left vacant when U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego decided to seek the U.S. Senate seat. He'll face Republican Kari Lake in November.

Former Phoenix City Council member Yassamin Ansari led over former state lawmaker Raquel Terán by less than 0.5 percentage points — the margin that triggers a recount under Arizona law.

As of Aug. 20, Ansari pulled ahead by just 39 votes, three fewer than the initial count. In total, Ansari received 19,087 votes while Terán received 19,048. A Maricopa County judge announced the results at 11:30 a.m.

In a statement, Terán said she had called Ansari to congratulate her and indicated she was committed to helping Democrats up and down the ballot win in November's election.
