GOP primary for Maricopa County sheriff called in favor of Sheridan

As of Tuesday night, Sheridan had about 164,900 votes in the primary race for Maricopa County sheriff.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — Jerry Sheridan has won the Republican primary race for Maricopa County sheriff, the Associated Press called.

As of Wednesday morning, the unofficial election results show Jerry Sheridan having 164,980 votes, Frank Milstead having 89,832 votes and Mike Crawford having 67,264 votes.

Milstead is the former director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Sheridan is the former chief deputy of the sheriff's office, and Crawford is a former Glendale police officer.

Maricopa County has one of the largest sheriff's offices in the nation. Republican Joe Arpaio presided over the agency for 24 years until Democrat Paul Penzone defeated him in the 2016 election.

Penzone resigned from office earlier this year, resulting in former Republican Russ Skinner getting appointed as sheriff. Skinner is now running as a Democrat for sheriff.
