PHOENIX — Supporters of Proposition 479 are expecting the transportation funding measure to pass following Tuesday's election results in Maricopa County.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 60% of voters approved the proposition that will extend the county's half-cent sales tax for another 20 years.
"Proposition 479 is not just a win for the people of Maricopa County, but a competitive edge for Arizona business,” Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Chair and Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke said in a statement on Wednesday.
The proposition's extension is projected to generate $15 billion in revenue for roadway projects across the Valley, including improvements to Interstate 10 and Interstate 17.
"We stand ready to get to work on the promises made to voters and deliver a world-class transportation system that will ensure a vibrant economy and superior quality of life for everyone in the region for decades to come," Hartke added.
The transportation tax was initially passed in 1985 and was later renewed in 2004. It was set to expire in 2025.
