PHOENIX — The race for Congressional District 5 is between Republican incumbent Andy Biggs and Katrina Schaffner. The district includes portions of Chandler, Apache Junction, Gilbert and Queen Creek.
As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the Associated Press had called the CD5 race in favor of Biggs after the Republican incumbent earned nearly 60% of votes.

Andy Biggs (R), incumbent
Biggs is the current House Representative for Arizona's 5th Congressional District. He assumed office in 2017 and before serving in this position, Biggs served as an Arizona state senator, was the Senate Majority leader for one year, and served as Senate President for four years. He also served as an Arizona state representative in Arizona State Senate District 12 from 2003 to 2011.
Before working in government, Biggs was a private practice attorney, graduated from Arizona State University with an M.A., graduated from the University of Arizona with a J.D. and graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A.
Biggs and his wife have lived in Gilbert for over 35 years, and have six children and 10 grandchildren.

- is a "fierce defender of human life" and has "fought to defund Planned Parenthood.
- believes education decisions should be made by parents.
- supports the Second Amendment.
- will fight to repeal Obamacare.
Biggs had no challengers in the Republican primary in July.
Katrina Schaffner (D), challenger
Schaffner is the Democratic challenger in the race for Arizona's 5th Congressional District and a first-time candidate. She was born in Chicago to a family of immigrants, according to her campaign website. Her grandparents came to America after surviving forced labor camps in Nazi Germany.
She went to community college and pursued her cosmetology license, which is something that "drives her support for investing in middle America," her campaign website said.
Schaffner is also an activist and advocates for "policies that benefit everyday families," such as affordable healthcare, education, economic reform and climate action, according to her website. Schaffner says she is is also a proud Ukrainian and has supported local refugees, organized fundraisers and advocated on Capitol Hill since Russia invaded Ukraine.
According to her campaign website, Schaffner:
- supports protecting abortion rights and reproductive freedoms including access to IVF.
- wants to invest in affordable housing and implement a national rent control standard.
- supports the Inflation Reduction Act.
- advocates for increasing technology and staffing to secure the border.
- wants to expand background checks and strengthen red flag laws.
