CHICAGO — Night four of the Democratic National Convention is here and the lineup of speakers is set to include a few familiar faces from Arizona.
After a week of Democrats’ most prominent figures rallying the party faithful, Vice President Kamala Harris will accept her party’s nomination during a speech in which she is widely expected to offer her vision and policy agenda to the American people.
Tonight's speaker lineup includes Harris herself, as well as three prominent politicians from Arizona. The pop star Pink is set to headline the final night of the convention. The Rev. Al Sharpton, the prominent civil rights leader, has also announced he will speak.
Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords will speak about gun violence sometime after 6 p.m. Arizona time, according to the convention organizers. After Pink's performance, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly will speak, and Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego will be the second to last speaker of the 6 o'clock hour.
The fourth and final night of the convention's theme is "For Our Future." Previous days' themes included "A Fight for Our Freedoms," "A Bold Vision for America's Future," and "For the People."
On day two of the convention, Arizonan John Giles, GOP mayor of Mesa, spoke about the Republican party's changes over the years, saying he is more comfortable speaking in front of a room full of Democrats than he is in the Republican party.
"I have a confession to make. I'm a lifelong Republican, so, I feel a little out of place tonight but I feel more at home here than in today's Republican party," Giles said. "The Grand Old Party has been kidnapped by extremists and devolved into a cult: The cult of Donald Trump."
Giles echoed a beloved Arizona politician in his reasoning for supporting the Democratic ticket.
"My hero, John McCain, taught us to put country over party and that's how Vice President Harris and Governor Walz will lead, too," Giles said. "John McCain's Republican party is gone and we don't owe a damn thing to what's been left behind."
Other speakers at the DNC have included:
- Hillary Clinton, former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee
- First Lady Jill Biden
- President Joe Biden
- John Giles, GOP mayor of Mesa
- Former first lady Michelle Obama
- Former President Barack Obama
- Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro
- Former President Bill Clinton
- Tim Walz, Minnesota governor and vice presidential nominee
