PHOENIX — Just days after Arizona Police Association's President Justin Harris spoke on stage at a rally in support of Donald Trump, the Association announced Monday they are endorsing Democrat Ruben Gallego for US Senate, dealing a blow to Kari Lake's campaign.
The association is the largest public safety association in the state and represents thousands of active law enforcement officers.
"Congressman Gallego has continually fought for robust, increased funding for America's Law Enforcement, and specifically Arizona Law Enforcement, securing over $168,000,000,000 (BILLION) in direct support of police officers so that they have the personnel and equipment needed to both protect themselves and keep communities safe," a statement from the association said.
The association endorsed Trump for president just three days ago on stage at Trump's rally in Glendale.
"The Arizona Police Association and their 12,000 members, family and friends are proud to extend our endorsement to Donald J. Trump for President of the United States of America," Harris said on stage.
Trump has endorsed Kari Lake for the U.S. Senate, not Ruben Gallego.
The Association said in a press release that Gallego's military experience went into the decision to endorse him.
"As a Marine combat veteran, we know Congressman Gallego understands the complexities of modern policing in American society today, while at the same time recognizing the public's expectations," Arizona Police Association President Justin Harris said. " The APA does not take our endorsements lightly; we recognize the importance of having a U.S. Senator that can bring people together to improve society for all. We believe Congressman Gallego will be that U.S. Senator."
The Arizona Police Association also endorsed Rachel Mitchell (R) for county attorney and Jerry Sheridan (R) for county sheriff.
Lake, who is also running for US Senate, has been endorsed by the Arizona Law Enforcement Association and the Arizona Conference of Police and Sheriffs.
“Over the last few years, Law enforcement has faced escalating attacks from radical politicians like Ruben Gallego. These misguided attacks undermine our core mission and made it harder for our officers to keep Arizona safe. Kari Lake has been unwavering in her support of our Sworn, Detention, and Civilian personnel in Arizona Law Enforcement. We're honored to endorse her," the Arizona Law Enforcement Association said in their endorsement of Lake.
