PHOENIX — Arizona's Republicans have a bigger registration advantage over Democrats going into the 2024 presidential election compared to four years earlier.
The latest registration statistics released by the Arizona Secretary of State show 1,562,091 registered Republicans and 1,266,536 registered Democrats, nearly a six-point difference between the two parties.
Going into the 2020 presidential election, Republicans had a three-point advantage over Democrats. President Joe Biden narrowly won Arizona by about 11,000 votes in 2020.
The state's GOP leaders say they're confident this significant advantage over Democrats in 2024 will deliver victories for Republicans in the battleground state.
“The record-breaking voter registration numbers we’re seeing are proof that Arizonans are ready to take back their state and their country," AZGOP Chair Gina Swoboda said in a statement.
Despite continuously holding a registration advantage over Democrats in the last few elections, several Republican candidates have lost statewide races in Arizona, likely due to the state's large number of non-affiliated voters.
Arizona has a lot more independent voters compared to four years ago. The latest data shows 1,471,309 non-affiliated voters, which consists of about 33% of the state's total electorate and 110,000 more independent voters compared to 2020.
Maricopa County, which helped swing Arizona for Biden in 2020, has about 48,000 more independent voters than it did in 2020. The county also lost over 74,000 registered Democratic voters since the last presidential race.
In total, the Grand Canyon State has 4,367,593 registered voters going into the general election, which is a significantly higher amount than what the state reported in 2020 or 2016.
