PHOENIX — The Arizona Senate narrowly rejected an effort to penalize people who drive too slow on the state's roads.
Senate Bill 1681 would have charged Arizonans who drive at a "less than normal speed" on the left side of the roadway a $250 penalty.
Arizona law already states that slow drivers shall stick to the right-hand lane but the bill would have essentially created a financial penalty to drivers who violate the rule.
Arizona's senators failed to pass the bill in a 15-14 vote on Thursday. Eleven Republicans and four Democrats voted in favor of passing the bill. One senator did not vote, which could have potentially provided the majority needed to pass the bill.
The bill had gotten bipartisan support when it was passed out of the Senate Transportation Committee in a 5-2 vote earlier this month.
