Arizona lawmaker resigns after sexual misconduct allegation surfaces

Democrat Jevin Hodge denied the allegations of sexual misconduct that recently came to light in a newspaper article.

PHOENIX — Arizona State Rep. Jevin Hodge, D-District 8, has resigned less than two months into his appointment to the job after a damaging newspaper article recently publicized allegations of sexual misconduct made against the politician when he was a college student.

George Washington University records show Hodge allegedly broke sexual misconduct, violence standards while he was a university student in 2015, according to documents obtained by the Arizona Republic.

Hodge denied the allegations and claimed his request for police to fully investigate the allegations was denied.

"I take responsibility for all my actions and have used this experience to grow as an adult," Hodge said in a statement after the Republic article was published.

But Democratic leaders in the Arizona House have announced that Hodge has resigned his seat, which he was appointed to fill earlier this year after Athena Salman's resignation.

"We have accepted Representative Hodge's resignation, which he offered in good faith and out of respect for our caucus, and we are prepared to move forward with the important business of the state," House Democratic Leader Lupe Contreras said in a statement.

Hodge unsuccessfully ran for a spot on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in 2020. Two years later, he came close to unseating Republican David Schweikert in Arizona's 1st Congressional District after losing by less than 1% in the general election.
