Phoenix teen hit in face with baseball bat at school, gets 12 stitches

A Valley mom is upset after she claims leaders at Estrella Middle School didn't call her or paramedics after her son was hit with a bat at baseball practice.

PHOENIX — A Phoenix mom is upset with her son's middle school after she claims they didn't call either her or paramedics when her son was hit in the face with a bat by another student at baseball practice.

Carol Delarosa says her son Ulisses Delarosa was struck so hard that he doesn't remember going to the hospital.

"[He got] twelve stitches in his mouth. That's his lip and the top of the roof of his mouth, and on the inside of his gums," she said.

The incident happened this past Friday at Estrella Middle School, when Delarosa says Ulisses and another player on the team got into an argument.

"The boy was making negative comments against him, such as he shouldn't be on the team and he's not good enough to be on the team...Ulisses got mad and agitated and smacked the boy with his baseball glove," Delarosa said.

After that, he walked away. But Delarosa said that's when the other boy escalated the situation.

"He saw Ulisses was coming and he got the bat and he swung and he hit him in the mouth," she said.

Delarosa said Ulisses has a concussion and needed stitches, yet she claims the school never called paramedics or her.

"He could have died if he would have got hit on the right place on the back of his head. You didn't know the force of the blow, and you chose not to call a medic for him," she said.

A spokesperson for the school district said the school is investigating the incident and sent the following statement:

"The safety of our students is paramount. Whenever one of our students is seriously injured, we follow protocol and call paramedics immediately. Unfortunately, in this case, the student's father left the premises with his child before Estrella Middle School staff members were able to do that."

Delarosa said that was not the case. She also says she is planning on filing assault charges against the student who hit her son.
