PHOENIX — The Arizona Attorney General's Office says a Peoria police officer was indicted for fraud after he used money from a nonprofit to make personal purchases.
According to the AG's office, Peoria Police Sergeant Jon Meck stole the money from the Arizona Tactical Officers Association while he served as the nonprofit's treasurer.
Meck served on the ATOA board from Sept. 1, 2009, to August of last year. An investigation revealed that Meck started to steal funds in February 2012, prosecutors say.
The Peoria Police Department says that Meck has been on administrative leave since Aug. 3, 2018, when allegations of theft and fraud were brought to the agency.
The ATOA is comprised of members from Arizona police agencies and is designed to provide members with tactical training.
The Peoria Police Department said Tuesday it was opening a separate internal investigation into Meck.
The department offered this statement to 12 News:
Meck will continue to be on administrative leave until the completion of the internal investigation. We hold all members of our department to the highest standards and thoroughly investigate all incidents of alleged misconduct. Due to the ongoing internal investigation, we are unable to provide any further information at this time. The Attorney General’s office can provide information regarding the criminal investigation.
