Groh, of Tiffin, Ohio, was assigned to Company F, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division during the war.
He was 22 years old when he was reported missing in action on Nov. 13, 1944, during the Hürtgen Forest offensive, near Hürtgen, Germany, the Army said.
The conflict, fought between Allied and German forces, was described as "one of the bloodiest conflicts" of the war.
On Nov. 14, 1944, the War Department said it believed that Groh had died during the offensive. He was one of "tens of thousands of casualties" to lose his life during the conflict.
Groh was identified in July 2021 by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
"In April, 1947, a set of remains was recovered from the area where PFC Groh fell," according to the Department of Defense.
Those remains were interred at the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium.
Groh's identification came after his remains were exhumed from the cemetery in April 2019 for laboratory analysis and identification.
Groh is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Hombourg, Belgium.
