WASHINGTON — Bluey, the blue heeler pup who has taken over children's TV, is headed to the big screen.
Disney and BBC studios announced Tuesday that the first-ever "Bluey" animated film is in the works and is set to have a theatrical release in 2027. The film will follow the adventures of Bluey, her younger sister Bingo and their parents Bandit and Chilli, while keeping the same "charm and humor" of the beloved show.
The Australian animated series, which debuted in 2018, has grown a massive following and became the most-watched series worldwide on Disney+ in 2024. "Bluey" has won multiple awards including an Emmy, Peabody and a BAFTA.
"Bluey" creator Joe Brumm will write and direct the feature film, according to Disney's announcement. Melanie Zanetti, David McCormack and the rest of the hit show's vocal talent will star in the animated film.
"I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie," Brumm said in a statement. "I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together."
The movie is a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios.
“Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of more than fifty artists and producers whose talent, dedication, and creativity have shaped Bluey into the beloved series it is today." Daley Pearson and Charlie Aspinwall, Ludo Studio Co-Founders and Directors, said in a joint statement. "We’re excited to continue showing Queensland as a home for world-class talent and to share a new beautiful Bluey story by Joe Brumm with families around the world.”
Following the theatrical release, the movie will stream on Disney +.
