The Oakland Raiders are giving Aldon Smith another chance.
The troubled pass rusher agreed to re-sign Monday, the team announced, despite a lingering suspension that should sideline him for more than half of the 2016 season.
Smith joined Oakland last year on a one-year contract in an attempt to relaunch his career after a series of off-field incidents led to his release from the San Francisco 49ers during training camp last year. Smith was suspended for a full year on Nov. 17 for his latest violation of the league's substance-abuse policy.
He had 3½ sacks in nine games last season. In his first three seasons with the 49ers, Smith recorded 42 sacks.
The Raiders are looking for a pass rush beyond defensive end Khalil Mack, who recorded 15 of the team's 38 sacks in 2015. Oakland also signed outside linebacker Bruce Irvin this offseason.
