Crews battling West Fire near Payson in northern Arizona

The lightning-caused fire has grown to 15,074 acres and is 72% contained.
Crews are battling the Clair and Bartlett fires in the Tonto National Forest. Both were sparked by storms and are causing evacuations.

PAYSON, Ariz. — Fire crews are currently fighting the West Fire, burning 13 miles north-northwest of Payson since Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Latest fire updates: 

  • Residents east of SR 87 and east of North Pine Creek Canyon Road are under "READY" status
  • Geronimo Estates residence are in "READY" status
  • Tonto National Forest has closed the land surrounding the fire, including the Pine Trailhead

The West Fire has burned 15,074 acres and is 72% contained as of Sept. 29, fire officials said. 

Are there any evacuations? 

The following communities are under the "GO" order and have been asked to evacuate: 

  • There are no communities under "GO" orders

The following communities are under the "SET" order and have been asked to prepare for possible evacuation: 

  • There are no communities under "SET" orders

The following communities are under the "READY" order and have been asked to be aware of nearby fire danger: 

  • Residents east of SR 87 and east of North Pine Creek Canyon Road
  • Residents in Geronimo Estates

What roads or highways have been closed? 

Access to Geronimo Estates from SR 87 is being rerouted to Houston Mesa Road.

Are there any shelters available for residents who may be evacuated? 

Officials have not released information on shelters.
