VERIFY: How likely are Arizonans to fall victim to online dating scams?

The report, from HighSpeedInternet.com, found that people in Arizona lose an average of $11,522 to catfishing.

Arizonans are at the top of the list when it comes to the likelihood of being catfished, according to a new report.

The report, from HighSpeedInternet.com, found that people in Arizona lose an average of $11,522 to catfishing, a term used for people who make a fake profile and target dating apps and websites to scam people out of money.

According to the report, which used FBI data from 2016, Americans, in a single year, lost $187 million to romance scams.

And the states where people are most likely to be catfished?

Arizona is No. 4 just behind Colorado, Nevada and the list-topping Alaska.

Martin Hellmer, with the FBI in Phoenix, says a lot of victims are in retirement communities.

“Since the community is so big here in Arizona due to the large number of retirees, we do unfortunately see a large number of victims of romance scams here in Arizona,” Hellmer said.

The FBI says catfishers will usually tell you they work overseas, court you for weeks or months but eventually they always fall into some sort of situation where they need money.

And once a victim hands the money over, the catfishers disappear.

California had the most catfishing victims in the country, according to the report.
