It's the Valley construction project decades in the making, the future Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
On Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Transportation began working on homes to create a clear path for the roadway that will directly link the West Valley and East Valley.
The first phase began in the Ahwatukee Foothills Goldman Ranch neighborhood. ADOT crews began working to remove asbestos from three homes on Wednesday morning. This involves the removal of roof tiles. These are homes ADOT already owns and ones that are vacant.
On Thursday, ADOT will demolish one home around seven in the morning.
ADOT got the necessary right of way for the South Mountain Freeway more than 20 years ago.
Freeway construction is expected to begin in mid-2016.
