Woman dead following car crash in north Phoenix

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on Saturday and alcohol was a factor, police say.

PHOENIX — A woman died in a car crash in north Phoenix, police said.

Phoenix police officers responded to the area of Beardsley Road and 7th Avenue regarding a crash and serious injuries around 10 p.m. on Saturday. When officers arrived at the scene, they located a man, later identified as 36-year-old Dustin Peck, with minor injuries. They also located a woman, later identified as 77-year-old Maxine Carstedt, with serious injuries.

Police said Carstedt did not survive her injuries and died at the scene.

Detectives took over the investigation and preliminary information suggests Peck was driving east on Beardsley Road, approaching 7th Avenue, when he ran a red light. Peck then hit a median and the car Carstedt was driving, which was facing north and stopped for the red light.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash and Peck was arrested and ultimately charged with manslaughter and drinking under the influence, police said.
