PHOENIX - The Maricopa Medical Examiner's report that Daniel Shaver had bullet wounds to hsi back may not tell the whole story, experts said Friday.
Shaver, who was unarmed, was allegedly shot to death by former Mesa police officer Phillip Brailsford. Brailsford is charged with second degree murder in the shooting.
According to the Medical Examiner's autopsy, Shaver was shot five times, including two rounds that entered the back of his neck and the back of his left shoulder.
"The strikes do tell the story," former Phoenix police officer Paul Penzone said, "but they're not necessarily the entire story."
Penzone said the movement of Shaver's body and the physics of the bullets could make the autopsy report mean different things. But, he said, the case still boils down to whether any other officer would reasonably have done the same thing.
"If you can't justify the first round," Penzone said, "then it doesn't matter if it's one or 50."
