No dad, no dock: Phoenix man turns dad jokes into booming business online

Logan Lisle runs Dock Tok, a social media dad joke empire with millions of followers.

PHOENIX — Imagine turning your love of corny jokes into a booming business. Logan Lisle has taken his love of dad jokes to social media and managed to turn it into a job.

"You know I'm talking with a girl," he said sitting in his kitchen, "She's like, Oh, great, you're married or have kids or something. I'm like, No, I just, I just do dad jokes on social media."

It's only crazy because you never thought of it.

Lisle is the guy on your social media feed, sitting on a dock by a beautiful lake with a cup of coffee, telling terrible dad jokes with his brothers.

"Two guys on a dock telling dad jokes," he said.

Lisle came up with Dock Tok about four years ago as a bit. His main business was wedding videography in California. But he was emceeing an event and used the idea as part of a pretaped video.

“About a year and a half later, TikTok comes out and I decided to take a little clip of that video put on Tiktok," he said. "It blew up."

The joke that went viral: What kind of doctor was Dr. Pepper? A fizzician.

Reading the joke doesn't have the same effect.

Because while you may groan at the joke, the joke itself is only half of it. The real punch line is the deadpan, deadly serious acceptance of the joke, as if someone just said they needed to cut the grass later that day.

"We're not much of, like, actors," Lisle said.

By now, you may be wondering why we, here in Arizona, are talking to a TikTok creator who films in California...usually San Diego or Lake Tahoe.

It's because Logan Lisle, whose business is based on a dock, lives in Phoenix...where there is not dock.

"Yep," Lisle said, "We try to find a few docks around here, but it's not as picturesque.”

Instead, Lisle takes it on the road to his California hometowns and films dad jokes in bulk.

Which brings us to another thing that's missing. Remember how Lisle was describing his job to a girl?

Yeah, he's not a dad either.

So no dad and no dock. At least not here. But Logan Lisle has turned Dock Tok into an empire with millions of followers on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.

He has product endorsement deals. He's filmed with celebrity cameos like Kevin Bacon. This past weekend he filmed dad jokes with Joey Chestnut as he competed in Netflix's live hot dog eating contest in Las Vegas.

Lisle has his face on his own coffee, and his picture on the cover of his first book of dad jokes.

Next stop, Lisle said he'd like to take Dock Tok past California...to other docks. And maybe on his own dock one day.

Lisle left 12News with our very own dad joke: "My father always said no news is good news. Great man...but a terrible journalist."
