Mesa family says their son was assaulted so severely he was hospitalized. Police say without video of the fight, they can't make an arrest

Mesa Police says there is no probable cause in the case.

MESA, Ariz. — A 14-year-old Mesa boy spent his entire summer break in a cast.

An x-ray dated May 25, 2024, shows the severity of the teen’s injury: both bones in his left arm split in half.

“Every week we were getting x-rays to make sure it was healing okay," Brittany Warrick, the boy’s mother, said.  “He has three incisions where they inserted two wires to help his bones straighten out because his arm healed warped like crooked.”

Warrick said her son suffered a broken arm, a concussion, and several cuts after another teen boy allegedly attacked him at a park in Mesa.

“I turned around, and I saw his whole face and he’s holding his arm and there’s blood all over his shirt and chest,” Warrick said.

A video posted on Snapchat after the fight showed the teen sitting on the ground and holding his arm, while another teen boy could be overheard laughing.

“The fact that they would post online immediately after and laugh about it, and get likes social media is, it’s insane for me to think they would do that,” Jeffrey Warrick, the teen’s step-father, said.

The teen’s family reported the incident to police.

Mesa Police told 12News the investigating officer closed the case, “due to no video footage of the actual fight and due to the differing stories made by each involved party, probable cause has not been established in this case.”

The parents of the injured teen said they want police to take another look, worried if there are no consequences for teen fights, they’ll just keep happening.

“They’re getting away with it. There’s no accountability,” Warrick said.

A Mesa Police spokesperson said a detective was assigned to review the investigating officer's initial findings.
