There may finally be a light at the end of the tunnel for retired U.S. Army veteran Steve Cooper.
12 News has followed Cooper's story for several years. The Department of Justice notified him yesterday it will not appeal a federal judge's ruling from earlier this year, awarding Cooper $2.5 million in his medical malpractice suit.
"Last night we received written confirmation from the Department of Justice based on a lot of work from the media and local and national politicians," Cooper said.
During trial, Cooper's attorneys proved the VA failed to properly diagnose and treat his Stage 4 prostate cancer in a timely manner.
"Obviously any additional cash or funds helps to alleviate any future medical bills and allows me to provide more cash and financial security for my family," Cooper said.
Cooper has always maintained the case wasn't about money. He continues to battle stage four prostate cancer.
