PHOENIX - Teachers and students in the Murphy School District are now wondering if there will even be school following spring break.
The district elected a new board president at a meeting Monday night following the retirement of Superintendent Jose Diaz and reassignment of Board President Richard Polanco.
Board member Raymond Rodriguez was elected as the new president.
Arizona Sen. Catherine Miranda is stepping in to help and working with business leaders to find a solution.
In a Facebook post, the senator wrote:
"We have a huge problem when teachers and students have to worry about their next paycheck or their next chapter to study in their classroom! Because of mismanagement of money and poor leadership, our community in Murphy district now faces possible receivership; either in 30 days or July. There are 3 possible scenarios:
1. Receivership immediately in 30 days.
2. Possible legislation for 2 million dollars to buy time for teachers and students until July; then receivership or
3. Business communities like Precision Components and Marco Crane pulling through with support to keep our district open with possible discussions with the County Superintendent. Thank you Kim Owens for your leadership.
I will continue to work hard for Murphy families, students and teachers!"
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
