Phoenix commander who gave Tyler Moldovan his badge is now police chief of Goodyear

Chief Brian Issit worked for the Phoenix Police Department for 22 years. He oversaw the Desert Horizon Precinct when an officer was shot eight times and survived.

PHOENIX — A 22-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department has been selected as Goodyear's new police chief.

Chief Brian Issitt assumed his new role in Goodyear this month after he retired from Phoenix police in 2023.

Issitt was the commander of Phoenix's Desert Horizon Precinct when Officer Tyler Moldovan was shot eight times in December 2021 near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road. Moldovan survived the attack and Issitt notably presented him with his official police badge at Chase Field.

"Nothing prepares you as a leader for having an officer of yours that's shot. Really, mortally wounded," Issitt told 12News during the badge ceremony. "I mean Tyler wasn't expected to survive."

Issitt was appointed to lead the Goodyear agency after former Chief Santiago Rodriguez retired earlier this year.

City officials said Issitt was selected for his impressive work experience and passion for public safety.

"He is a police officer who has been through the good and the bad while protecting the public, which will give him great perspective in this leadership role," Goodyear City Manager Wynette Reed said in a statement.
