Restaurant owned by popular Valley chef damaged by fire

The fire happened in the kitchen of The Mexicano, a Maggiore Group restaurant in Paradise Valley. Here are the latest details.

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. — The Mexicano, a restaurant in Paradise Valley owned by the popular Valley chef behind restaurants such as Hash Kitchen and The Sicilian Butcher, was damaged in a fire on Saturday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Phoenix fire told 12News they were called to a restaurant near the intersection of 40th Street and Cactus Road due to a kitchen fire.

A 12News crew found fire trucks outside of The Mexicano, a restaurant owned by award-winning chef Joey Maggiore as part of his Maggiore Restaurant Group, which also operates the Hash Kitchen, Sicilian Butcher, Sicilian Baker restaurants and more.

Phoenix fire said crews were able to get control of the fire using hoses and keep it from spreading out of the kitchen.

The fire did spread above the oven, and ladder crews cut hold in the roof to make sure the flames did not spread into the attic of the restaurant.

No one was hurt and investigators are working to determine what caused the fire, which appeared to start around the oven and stove.

The Mexicano was opened in December 2021 and offers dishes such as a three-foot quesadilla, lava rock fajitas and street tacos, along with a build-your-own margarita bar.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
