Terrorism suspect's mother called 911 reporting him missing, new evidence shows

The mother of a man now held on terrorism charges says she had no idea he was planning to attack a sheriff's deputy, according to new evidence.

PHOENIX — According to the new evidence from the January deputy-involved shooting in Fountain Hills, a mother was frantically looking for her son, without any idea he had just been shot.

On Jan. 7, Ismail Hamed, 18, told a 911 operator that he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, was armed with rocks and a knife and wanted to meet face-to-face with an officer in Fountain Hills, according to documents from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Hamed threw rocks at a sergeant before advancing towards him with a knife, according to MCSO. The sergeant shot him.

While this happened, Hamed's mother called 911 twice. She was outside, blocks away from the shooting scene, looking for him herself.

"He's always an intelligent boy, he's all good," his mother told the dispatcher. "We don't have any issues in the family."

A sergeant with her talked to the dispatcher, realizing the situation.

"Where are you with her?" the dispatcher asked.

"In the parking lot just south of the crime scene," the sergeant said.

"I haven't given her any information. Nobody has said anything yet," the dispatcher said. "Can you just tell her to go home and I'll have a deputy go make contact with her there."

An MCSO spokesperson says everyone followed protocol in this situation. Though the dispatcher knew of the crime scene, it's not their job to release that kind of information.

Hamed is facing terrorism charges for contacting the Islamic State, according to court paperwork.
