If you drive on these Tempe streets, you'll need to slow down. City lowers speed limit on multiple roads

In a unanimous vote Thursday night, the Tempe City Council approved reducing the speed limit.

TEMPE, Ariz. — You'll have to let off the gas in Tempe.

The City Council approved a unanimous vote to reduce the speed limit on multiple streets Thursday night.

“The slower we go the better we’ll be," said Councilmember Jennifer Adams.

It's part of the Tempe's Operation Slow Down intending to make its streets safer for everyone.

“It will be safer for people on bicycles which is a problem for Tempe," Adams said. "It will be safer for children crossing the streets.”

Adams said 100,000 people commute to Tempe every day and the roads where speed is being reduced are where they see the most trouble.

Here are the roads where you can see changes:

  • Mill Avenue: Just north of the Town Lake Bridge, the speed will be reduced from 45 miles per hour to 35 mph. Also, on Mill Avenue from Broadway Road to University Drive will go from 40 mph to 35 mph.
  • College Avenue: If you're heading north on College Avenue starting at Curry Road the speed will go from 35 mph to 30 mph. It ends once you enter the City of Scottsdale.
  • First Street: The road just sound of Rio Salado Parkway will go from 35 mph to 30 mph.
  • Southern Avenue: From 48th Street to the railroad tracks which is Kyrene Road will go from 45 mph to 40 mph.

The changes were also made to provide consistent speed in these areas.

Adams said the reduction will start 30 days from the council meeting and will cost $8,000.

Police enforcement will also be increased in those areas to let drivers know about the change Adams said.

"I don’t want anybody getting a ticket out there so just slow down and be aware of your surroundings," the councilmember said.
