Bad drivers will be ticketed in Tempe if pulled over within next 2 months, city warns

The vice mayor said Tempe will be initiating 'Operation Slow Down' this month.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Tempe police officers will stop issuing warnings and start issuing tickets to drivers who violate the city's traffic laws.

Vice Mayor Jennifer Adams recently announced that the police department will initiate "Operation Slow Down" on Jan. 15, which will involve officers ticketing any drivers pulled over for a traffic violation. No warnings will be given.

The city will also be deploying more digital radar speed signs around Tempe to warn motorists about their speeding, the vice mayor added.

The initiative is expected to run for the next two months.

Tempe's efforts to reduce poor driving behavior comes after the police department made 34 arrests related to drag racing over the last six months, according to the vice mayor.

At least 20 fatal crashes were reported on Tempe's streets in 2022, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
