Now that the weather has cooled off, this would be a great time to take a hike. South Mountain Park is right in our own backyard and includes 51 miles of trails.
The park is the largest city park in the country covering 16,000 acres.
According to Phoenix.about.com, Dobbins Peak is 2,300 feet in elevation and is the highest point in the park offering great views of the city. You can get there by hiking or driving.
Hiking trails are clearly marked and are not intended to actually measure distances. The gated roadways, parking along the trail heads, restrooms and ramadas are open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and trails are open until 11 p.m.. You can check the South Mountain website for scheduled closings.
South Mountain Park is located in South Phoenix. Take Central Avenue south past Baseline Road until you come to the park entrance.
